Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding our mandate, global connectivity, and strategic operations.

What is the central mandate of the Foundation?
The Rothschild Foundation serves as the central strategic vehicle for the family’s philanthropic commitments. We act as the connecting node between our various independent foundations—including Waddesdon Manor (UK), Yad Hanadiv (Israel), and Hanadiv Europe—ensuring a unified vision across our global network.
Does the Foundation operate internationally?
Yes. While our headquarters are in the UK, our scope is fundamentally international. We coordinate initiatives that span Europe, Israel, and beyond, leveraging our network to address global challenges in arts, heritage, and environmental resilience. We are not limited by geography, but guided by where we can have the most significant strategic impact.
How does the Foundation select its partners?
We operate primarily through proactive partnership rather than open application. We seek out institutions and innovators whose work aligns with our long-term strategic pillars. Collaboration is key to our model; we often co-develop projects with our partners rather than acting solely as a financier.
What is the relationship with Waddesdon Manor?
Waddesdon Manor is a National Trust property managed by the Rothschild Foundation under a unique scheme of management. This arrangement allows the family to maintain active stewardship of the estate, ensuring the collection and grounds are preserved to the highest standards while remaining accessible to the public.
Are the archives at Windmill Hill accessible?
The Windmill Hill Archive acts as the repository for the family’s history and the Foundation’s records. It is a working private archive. Access is granted to academic researchers and historians strictly by appointment, following the submission of a formal research proposal.
How do you relate to other Rothschild foundations?
We are the bridge. While each foundation in our network—such as the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations or The Eranda Rothschild Foundation—operates with its own specific Board and mandate, The Rothschild Foundation facilitates high-level cooperation and knowledge sharing between them to maximise our collective impact.
